To inform my Windows antivirus reviews, I follow four of these: AV-Test, AV-Comparatives, SE Labs, and MRG-Effitas. Independent labs all over the world put antivirus products to the test and regularly report their findings. I found it in the End User License Agreement: “Total Defense Mobile Security and Total Defense Mac Antivirus are Rebranded BitDefender Software.” No Lab Scores, But… Not content to just rely on visual similarity, I went spelunking in the Total Defense website to find confirmation of the Bitdefender connection. Total Defense doesn’t have a menu choice for Privacy-in the Bitdefender product, that page manages VPN and tracker protection-but otherwise this product is clearly a licensed version of Bitdefender’s. The layout is the same, the left-rail menu is (almost) the same, even the Autopilot Recommendations panel is present in both. If you put this window next to the main window of Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, you’ll find they’re nearly identical, except for branding. Another row of buttons lets you manage your devices, configure ransomware protection, or set up the web protection browser extension.

Intego Mac Internet Security supports Mavericks (10.9) or higher, and ProtectWorks goes all the way back to 10.8 (Mountain Lion). If you’re stuck with an antique Mac and an ancient macOS version, there’s still hope. Avira, McAfee, and Norton are more demanding, requiring Catalina (10.15) or better. Like ESET and Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus for Mac, it supports macOS versions from Sierra (10.12) on up. Total Defense should be fine for all but the most antique Macs. The most up-to-date Macs run macOS Monterey (12) but not all Macs support this newest operating system. If you want to protect more Macs, choose the top-tier Total Defense suite, which protects up to 10 devices for $99.99 per year. Like Bitdefender and Kaspersky, Total Defense doesn’t go beyond the threefer. ESET offers a variety of other pricing tiers, for five, 10, and 15 licenses. That’s what you pay for Total Defense, and for Bitdefender, ESET Cyber Security for Mac, and Kaspersky as well. If you want to protect three Macs, $59.99 per year is a common price. How Much Does Total Defense Cost?Īs with Windows-based antivirus tools, just under $40 is the most common price for one year of antivirus protection for a single Mac. On the other hand, why not just buy the Bitdefender product? Unless you’re getting this protection as part of Total Defense’s cross-platform suite, that’s probably what you should do.

Total Defense Essential Anti-Virus for Mac is visibly a licensed version of Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac. Total Defense seems to have taken a different path. Most major security companies scrambled to add a macOS coding team and offer antivirus protection for macOS. As time went by, it became obvious that Macs need antivirus protection too. Just about every major antivirus company started life supplying protection for Windows (or DOS).
